How Do I Begin to Work on the Right Things?
We have been diving into what makes a company great and what makes people feel like they have a positive impact on those around them. One critical factor to success is the behavior of the leaders in the company. This all starts with getting alignment on the inside so we increase our effectiveness and focus on the outside.
We recently gave some specific guidelines to help you grow as a leader. As you apply these guidelines and they become habits we hope, that your stress level decreases, effectiveness increases, and communication with those you interface with improves. Remember that improving who you are and becoming a more effective leader is a lifetime journey. You do not suddenly arrive, it is a continued winding path with successes, failures, and learning experiences along the way. The key is to stay focused and work to become better every day.
Last month we presented the concept of a morning routine and I indicated what my morning routine currently looks like. I work to maintain focus and work on highest priorities. Doing this effectively every day is the goal, but I have days that I don’t do very well, days I am ineffective, days I waste too much time and do not accomplish what I hoped. This is life and it will happen. The key is to reflect on what went wrong, look at how to do better in the future, and get back into the game. Remember, the past is over, learn from it but don’t dwell on it, and the future has not yet arrived. The present is all we can impact now, so be present in the present and make it the best it can be.
One of the tools we will introduce this month is a tool to help you evaluate what you spend your time on. It will ask you to categorize everything you do into four quadrants and then begin to work to spend your time on what is most important. Our goal is not about getting everything done, rather it is getting the right things done. Understanding and working on what makes it “rain” and what is most important to you. That is the only way we can live out our purpose and utilize our unique gifts effectively.
