How did you start your new year?
It is hard to believe that one twelfth of the year is already gone.
- How is it going?
- Did you take the time to reflect on 2019?
- Did you take the time to develop a plan for 2020?
- Are you off to a great start or are you already discouraged?
Focus, determining what is most important, throwing the rest of your list away, and then sticking with your plan is key to accomplishing your goals.
As you look at the goals you have established, how many goals do you have? Are you overwhelmed? Do you already realize that you have taken on too much? If so, take a step back. Reflect again on what is most important to you this year. Keep things simple. It is much better to do less and do it really well, than to do more, and do nothing very well. The key is to focus on what is most important.
But, I have so much I would like to accomplish.
- How do I determine what is most important?
- What do I need to do to make sure I am focusing on doing that well?
- What about the rest of the things I felt were important, but I do not have time for?
- What do I do with those?
I can relate and have the same struggles. I have the tendency to have too many goals in too many areas, both personally and professionally. I have a difficult time focusing on what is most important and deleting the rest. Even coming into 2020, I started with too much and have asked myself every day. What is most important? What will most effectively move me towards where I want to be?
Here are some things to think about in becoming more focused.
- Do the goals you have established reflect what you consider to be most important?
- What are your priorities when looking through the lens of what you most want to accomplish?
- What is your overriding success goal for this year?
- As you look at what it will take to achieve that goal, where do you need to improve?
- Is it your leadership, ability to communicate, ability to write effectively, and/or interaction with your spouse, family, staff, or employees?
- At work or in your business, do you need to implement new systems, do you need to learn how to more effectively read financial statements, learn how to problem solve, and/or learn better program management skills?
- Do you need to develop better budgeting skills, become more organized, and/or learn a new hobby?
After looking at this list, determine the most significant learning and development priority that will have the most significant impact on accomplishing your highest priority for the year.
All of us have only 24 hours in a day and we need to be focused on using our hours effectively. Now that you have established the one focus area for personal development, read on to learn how to approach and achieve this personal development priority.
