You have established a personal development priority that is critical to achieving your most important success goal for the year. It is a personal development priority that you need now. How will you go about achieving this priority?
At this point you may be wondering, am I really only focusing on one personal development priority? Am I ignoring everything else? What about physical fitness, for example? Do I ignore this to focus on the new priority? The answer is no, you are not dropping things to focus on the new priority.
The areas of your life where you have developed good habits and practices should remain the constant. What you are now focusing on is new learning.
Let’s use fitness as an example. If your weight is under control and where you want it, work to maintain healthy eating. If you have gained some weight over the holidays, get back to what worked and re-establish that discipline. If you have an exercise program that is working, maintain that program and continue to measure your progress and make adjustments as needed to meet your goals.
Your personal development priority is new learning. How do you begin?
- Start with research. Look for leaders who reflect and have mastered this learning. Research books, audio materials, blogs, webinars, and workshops that are considered the best in this area of learning. Develop a list of materials that will give you the learning you desire.
- Order the top three to five books on the subject.
- Select two to three audio programs that will give you the learning you need.
- Read blogs that are considered the best in their class.
- Pick a couple of online webinars to help your learning.
- Select and schedule a workshop you can attend that will connect you with a great instructor and with others who are also learning about this subject.
With these materials in hand,
- Spend 30 minutes a day reading the books you have purchased.
- Listen to the audio programs when you are in the car, exercising, and doing other activities.
- Set aside time to complete the online webinars and read blogs.
- Attend the workshop.
As you are learning, begin to immediately apply this to the work you are doing. Doing solidifies learning and provides repetition. It begins to ingrain the learning in your mind. That’s why it’s so important to select a development priority you will apply immediately.
Don’t wait, get started today, and use the learning to make this your best year ever.
